TOPIK in Korea: Test Structure, Levels, and What It Is Used For

What TOPIK is

The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK, 토픽) is the official Korean-proficiency test run by the National Institute for International Education. It is the standard measure of Korean ability for foreigners and overseas Koreans, and it is held several times a year in Korea and at designated centres abroad.

The test is split into two:

• TOPIK I — for beginner to elementary ability, producing levels 1 and 2
• TOPIK II — for intermediate to advanced ability, producing levels 3 to 6

Each test covers listening, reading, and — for TOPIK II — writing. You choose which test to take; there is no progression requirement, though most people take TOPIK I first.

What your score is used for

A TOPIK score is a practical credential, not just a certificate:

• Visas and residence — some visa tracks award points or require a TOPIK level (for example the points-based F-2-7 residence system), and TOPIK is used in several visa categories.
• Citizenship — a Korean-language requirement is part of naturalisation, and TOPIK is a common way to demonstrate it.
• University admission — universities ask for a TOPIK level for Korean-medium degree programmes.
• Employment — many employers in Korea list a TOPIK level as a condition or a bonus in hiring.

Because the score is valid for two years from the result announcement, time your test against the application or visa deadline you are targeting.

Registering and taking the test

Registration runs through the official TOPIK website (topik.go.kr), where you pick the test (I or II), the session, and the test centre in Korea or abroad.

• Sessions — several per year, with registration opening roughly a month ahead and filling quickly at popular centres.
• What to bring — the registration confirmation and a valid ID (passport or, in Korea, your Alien Registration Card).
• Fees — a registration fee applies for each test; the amount is set per session.

Scores are announced a few weeks after the test, and a certificate is issued with the two-year validity date.

How to prepare

• Target the right level — check what level your visa, university or employer actually needs, then aim a little above it.
• Study with past papers — the format is stable, and working through past papers is the most efficient preparation.
• Practice the writing section — TOPIK II writing is where many candidates lose points; practising structured essays under time pressure helps.
