How moving works in Korea

Moving house in Korea is usually handled by a professional moving company (이사업체), which does the packing, transport and unpacking on the day. The market is well organised: you book a company by phone or online, agree a price, and the crew handles the boxes, furniture and appliances.

There are two common types of move:

• Full moving service (포장이사, pojang isa) — the crew packs and unpacks everything for you.
• Small-moving service (소형이사, sohyeong isa) — a lighter service for a studio or small load, often done with a smaller truck and less crew.

Which you need depends on the size of the home and how much you want to handle yourself. For a studio, the small service is usually the practical choice; for a full apartment, the full service saves the most effort.

Cost and how it is quoted

Moving prices in Korea are quoted per job rather than per hour, and are typically based on:

• The amount of goods — home size and volume
• The distance — the truck route between the two addresses
• Access — lift/elevator availability, distance from the entrance, parking
• Add-ons — appliance installation, ladder use, extra crew

Because the quote depends on these details, the standard approach is to get quotes from two or three companies for the same move and compare the breakdown rather than just the total. Book a few days ahead, and for the busy season (year-end and early spring) book earlier.

Preparing for moving day

A few things make the day go smoothly:

• Declutter before the move — boxes move faster when you are not transporting things you planned to throw away.
• Prepare the fridges and appliances — empty and defrost the fridge, and confirm whether the crew disconnects and reconnects appliances.
• Confirm access — tell the company about lifts, stairs and parking so the crew and quote match reality.
• Keep valuables and documents with you — passports, ARC, bankbooks and important documents should travel with you, not in the boxes.
• Be present — someone needs to be at both ends to direct the crew and check for damage before they leave.

After the move: update your address

Moving in Korea means updating your registered address on the residence system (전입신고, jeonip singo) within 14 days, through the local office or online. If you hold an Alien Registration Card, your ARC address should also be updated so it matches your actual residence — this matters for banking, phone contracts, insurance and immigration matters.

The practical list after moving:

• Residence registration — file the address-change report (전입신고) within 14 days.
• ARC address — update it with immigration so your card matches your home.
• Bank, phone, insurance — update your contact address with your bank, telecom provider and insurers.
• Utility and internet — arrange the transfer or new contracts for electricity, gas and internet at the new place.
